What are your
musical influences?
I was brought up on classical music but began being interested in rock and jazz when I was around
8 years old. From a keyboard perspective I'm still very into classical music; favourite composers include Bach, Debussy and Ravel. Piano jazz gods are, as far as I'm concerned, Dave Brubeck and Herbie Hancock, especially his pre-1980s stuff. On the rock front, I'm more attracted to music with good rhythm and vocals. From that perspective, there's The Beatles, Queen, Ben Folds Five, Cake, Foo Fighters, John Butler Trio to name just a few, but my music listening spectrum is so wide it would be inaccurate to highlight only 10 or 20 bands as influences.
What are your
favourite songs?
Hah! How much space does this website have? Well, my current top 5 in no particular order would be Cantaloupe Island (1964 Blue Note recording) and Chameleon, both by Herbie Hancock, Shadow Stabbing by Cake, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and ..... I can't decide on a 5th. Ask me again next week and the answer will be different.
What equipment
do you play?
Yamaha P80, Roland D10
Best moment?Travelling around the world with my wife for 16 months has to come top but musically, playing in a symphony orchestra is a fantastic feeling - when everyone's in tune. As far as JK's concerned, I can't wait to play a gig with some brass!
What else do you do?Apart from my day job as an IT engineer, I do quite a lot of reading and listening to music. I'm also a football nut and enjoy playing anything with the round ball, from 3-a-side to a full team comp and like to keep up to date with all the leagues around the world.
